FAQ
Crypto Wallet Recovery FAQ for Expats in the Netherlands
English answers for people and professionals in the Netherlands about assessment, remote or Amsterdam handling, security, costs and realistic recovery limits.
Short answer
Cryptoherstel provides English-language wallet-recovery assessments for people and professionals in the Netherlands. Suitable cases can be handled remotely, at the Amsterdam office or at another agreed location. Scope, fee and sensitive-material handling are agreed in writing before work; no wallet secrets are needed for the first assessment.
Can the assessment and recovery case be handled in English?
Yes. The assessment and the technical case are handled in English throughout, from the first review to the final handover.
Do I need to travel to Amsterdam?
No. Many suitable cases can be handled fully remotely, from the first assessment through the final client-controlled handover. The Amsterdam office is available by appointment when you prefer face-to-face contact or when agreed physical-material handling makes an in-person route useful. By prior arrangement, a suitable stage can also take place at your home or another agreed location.
Which law applies, and do you provide Dutch legal or tax advice?
The assignment operates under Dutch law. Cryptoherstel provides technical wallet-recovery services; we do not provide legal, probate or tax advice. If your case needs that advice, use your own lawyer, notary or tax adviser.
Can my lawyer, notary, executor or adviser be involved?
Yes. We work with heirs, executors, administrators, lawyers, notaries, family offices, advisers and businesses once the relevant identity and legal authority are established. By prior arrangement, a suitable meeting, verification step, material handover or final handover can take place at a professional’s office. Tell us your role in the first assessment, but do not send identity or authority documents through the initial form.
Should I use the assessment or the contact page?
Use the free assessment when you need help accessing your own or an inherited wallet; it asks for the technical context needed for a useful first review. Use the contact page for a general, professional or media enquiry, a partnership discussion, or when you want to arrange an NDA before discussing substantive case details. Neither route requires wallet secrets.
Do I need to send my seed phrase or password to get an assessment?
No. The assessment is free and needs no sensitive material—a description is enough: which wallet, what happened and what you still have. Under a written agreement we may later work with copies of wallet files on controlled systems, offline where appropriate, but never through a form, chat window or ordinary email. No legitimate service will ask you to type your recovery phrase into a website.
Can you guarantee recovery?
No, and treat any service that does with suspicion. What is possible depends entirely on what you still have. One missing BIP39 word creates a finite candidate set and the checksum narrows it, but the actual effort depends on the phrase, wallet type, any passphrase and what else is known. A phrase that is entirely gone, with no wallet file and no backup, cannot be rebuilt by anyone. After the free assessment you receive a realistic estimate, never a promise, and you pay only if access is restored.
How do I know Cryptoherstel is a real, registered company?
You can verify Dutch KvK registration 75927276, the physical office in Amsterdam and the named team independently. Work begins under a written agreement, and an NDA is available on request. The Trust Center brings the relevant verification routes together so you do not have to rely on claims made on a single page.
What if my wallet was stolen or I was scammed?
We do not take stolen-crypto or scam cases. Once coins have been sent to someone else, no one can reverse the blockchain transaction. Report the matter to the police and the appropriate fraud authority, and preserve transaction IDs and addresses as evidence. Be careful with anyone who contacts you afterwards promising to recover the funds for a fee; that is commonly a second scam.
What is recoverable and what is not?
A wallet file, device, partial or complete recovery phrase, or a password you partly remember can provide material for a technical assessment. Some incomplete, incorrectly ordered or invalid recovery phrases are solvable, but feasibility depends on how much reliable information remains and the size of the resulting search. A phrase that is entirely gone, with no wallet file, backup or remembered information, cannot be rebuilt by anyone.
How do you establish that I am authorized to access the wallet?
Before accepting a case, we verify identity and proof of ownership or legal authority through risk-based KYC and AML checks. An inherited, estate or business case also requires evidence that the person instructing us has authority to do so. Do not send those documents through the first-contact form; the required verification route is agreed after the initial review.
Are my funds safe with Cryptoherstel?
We are non-custodial: we do not receive, hold or move your assets on your behalf. Recovery work may require agreed, controlled access to sensitive wallet material, but the handover leaves you in control of the wallet and any asset movement. The fee is paid separately under the written agreement; it is not deducted from the wallet by us.
How long does recovery take?
It depends on the material and the size of the technical search. Some cases are completed quickly; complex passwords, partial recovery phrases, damaged media and legacy formats can require weeks or months. After usable material is received securely and the first technical checks are complete, we can usually determine during the first week whether there is a credible recovery path. That is a feasibility milestone, not a completion promise.
What does wallet recovery cost in the Netherlands?
The assessment is free. Our standard success fee is 20% of the recovered amount, agreed in writing before work and due only when access is restored. There are no upfront charges or hourly rates. For higher-value wallets the percentage is negotiated and is usually lower. No recovery fee is due when access is not restored.
Can you help with a wallet I inherited?
Yes. We work for heirs, executors, administrators, notaries and advisers once legal authority is established. What decides technical feasibility is whether a wallet file, device, backup or part of a recovery phrase still exists among the belongings. Preserve old computers and phones before anything is wiped, repaired or sold. We do not provide legal or probate advice.
Can you recover a wallet if I only have the public address or public key?
No. A public address can show a balance, but spending requires the private key, recovery phrase or access to an encrypted wallet file. Without one of those and without a backup, the wallet cannot be opened. Seeing the balance on a block explorer does not change that technical limit.
Is it too late if the wallet has been locked for years or the software is discontinued?
Age alone does not close a case. Coins remain on the blockchain even when the wallet software is no longer maintained. What matters is whether the wallet file, key, device, backup or enough of the recovery phrase still exists. Older formats can require era-appropriate software or data structures, which may add time and is not always possible.
I restored the wallet but the balance shows zero—are the assets gone?
Not necessarily. A zero balance after a clean restore can mean the wallet is looking at the wrong addresses because of a derivation-path or address-type mismatch, or that the restored phrase belongs to a different wallet. Check a known receiving address on a block explorer. If the assets still appear there, they have not moved and the next task is to identify the correct wallet configuration.
